Case Studies

So far, we have learned about: what sequential hermaphroditism is, what the main sex change schemes are, and how they may evolve. Now we are going to explore the sexual systems of three different fish in detail. Clark’s anemonefish (Amphiprion clarkii), a protandrous species; Bluehead wrasse (Thalassoma bifasciatum), a protogynous species; and coral gobies, a group of bidirectional hermaphrodites. In these case studies you will be introduced to the social ecology, mating systems, and sex change schemes of each species. These fish were selected in order to provide examples of each main scheme of sequential hermaphroditism.
